Mad Sin- Burn And Rise

released May 11, 2010 on People Like You Records

This is the 9th release from German psychobilly legends, Mad Sin. The first track is an instrumental that leads into "Last Gang Standing". Fast-paced, tuneful psychobilly with a strong similarity to Tiger Army and the Nekromantix in style. Darker in nature though. Highlighted tracks include "Cursed" (fast, demented and yet, oddly similar to Sublime?),  "Geisterfahrer" and "Fur Immer" (both sung in their native German with the former being fast paced and the latter slowed down with a hint of blues), "Wreckhouse Stomp" (imagine Fishbone playing psychobilly and you'd get this), "Nine Lives" (psychobilly with a strong country/folk influence), "Shitlist Bop" (sounds like they're channeling the Stray Cats) and "The March Of The Deviants" (seems to incorporate a bit of ska to produce an altogether different sound). In conclusion, a very fun album to listen to and in addition to the release by The Other, it's nice to see that the Germans are keeping psychobilly/horror punk alive and well. Check this out!

Luísa Maita
review by jaypaul

Solo debut by this Sao Paulo singer-songwriter features a predominantly acoustic-sounding Brazilian samba vibe with rich but unobtrusive electronic embellishments. Vocals & compositions really stand out - the next Bebel Gilberto or Céu? Maybe! This is a great new Brazilian recording.

Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno
review by jaypaul

Second release from Quantic's Cali, Colombia studio strives to build on vintage Latin (mostly cumbia) traditions by fusing them with features of dub & reggae to create something fresh & new. He succeeds admirably! Features many notable South American musicians.

Check out this video of "Un Canto a Mi Tierra"

Here's NPR's "First Listen" program about "Dog with a Rope" where you can hear all the tracks.

Second release from this British Afro-Brazilian Funk band presents a more evolved sound that's still cutting edge fusion, but also draws more heavily from the rich African and Brazilian musical heritage that inspires this band.  Nice!

Note: Track 8 is a Hendrix cover!

Here's the band on YouTube - Gotta see 'em live!

Parkway Drive- Deep Blue

released June 29, 2010 on Epitaph Records

This is the newest release from Australian metalcore band, Parkway Drive. I have seen them compared musically to As I Lay Dying. Otherwise, I'm new to their music. "Unrest" starts off this album with relentless metal-tinged hardcore which is fast and brutal. This is going to be their signature as "Sleepwalker" pushes it even further, starting off with lots of well-done hooks followed by a greater emphasis on drums. "Deadweight" is another strong track and sounds eerily like a metal-fied version of Blur at first before delving more into the usual.  "Alone" introduces a bit of melody into the mix, slowing down the pacing and diluting their sound. One of the most frustrating things about metalcore in this day and age is the constant incorporation of melody, which just doesn't stand up well when you have a band like Parkway Drive, which yearns to be brutal and uncompromising. Thankfully, "Home Is For The Heartless" makes up for this with a better balance of melody and brutalness. Overall, this album starts out strong but seems to peter out towards the end. At the risk of sounding too harsh, I really don't go for the lyrical content of such bands as it always leans towards suffering, etc. Regardless, this is still a strong album from a band to watch/listen to. If metalcore is your cup of tea, then check this out.
